A good platform makes the right path easier.

Build developer platforms around the work teams actually need to do.

A platform is an internal product

A platform team can deliver a technically impressive collection of tools without making product delivery any easier. The difference is whether the platform is designed around tasks its users need to complete.

Start by observing a few common journeys: creating a service, provisioning a test environment, releasing a change, finding an incident, or understanding cost. Look for the moments where teams need specialist help or repeat the same manual work.

Build one supported path

Choose a frequently used service pattern and make it dependable from end to end. A supported path should connect code, environment configuration, delivery, monitoring, and documentation.

Make defaults explicit and explain why they exist. Teams need to understand the security boundaries and operational responsibilities the platform handles, and the ones they still own.

Leave room for a justified exception

Standardization works best when the common case is easy and exceptions are visible. A platform that cannot accommodate a real workload requirement may push teams into creating unsupported alternatives.

Create a lightweight process for exceptions. Record the need, the tradeoff, the owner, and a review point. An exception is useful information about the platform’s current boundaries.

Measure friction, not inventory

The number of integrated tools says little about whether a platform is helping. Look at how long it takes to complete a task, how often a team needs help, and where work stops.

Pair those measures with reliability and operating cost. A faster deployment path is less useful if teams lose visibility into what was deployed or cannot recover safely when something goes wrong.

Improve through use

Introduce the platform with a small group of teams, support real work, and revise the path from observed problems. Documentation, error messages, and the support process are part of the product.

A good platform earns adoption by making the right path easier. Its value is the capability it gives other teams, not the amount of infrastructure it contains.
